A big undertaking

I first discovered the Babette blanket on the Purl Bee blog. Searching flickr inspired me further, check out all these lovely Babettes in different stages of creation. For more inspiration check out the Babette Blanket pool on flickr.

So, I am now planning to make my own Babette.
This will be a big undertaking for me as I am still new to
crocheting. I like that it is made in sections, that makes the task
seem a little less daunting.
Thanks to Sara1rene on flickr I discovered Cascade 220 yarn which comes in a wonderful array of colors. Check out my choices to the right. You can find this yarn on Alpaca Direct's website.
I haven't purchased the yarn yet, but hope to do so soon. I am really excited about this project!

Handmade Gifts and what I've been doing...

I have been crocheting like a mad woman making Christmas gifts. I won't get done with all I had hoped either. I made these two scarves for gifts. The top one is made from yummy baby alpaca yarn which I am so in love with! The bottom one is for my niece and is fun with chenille spirals.

An early Christmas

New Pillow cases
Sarah, who is the mother of two of my closest friends, made me these lovely pillow cases. I had told her about the pillow shams that mom made me and she made them to match. Wasn't that thoughtful!
The girls showing off their crocheted scarves. I am in love with the way Scout's turned out (on the right). I used hot pink chenille and made a spiral scarf, then edged it with furry pink and purple yarn. What little girl wouldn't love that?!
Beer soap, washcloth and beer
For the guys. I gave them Home Brew soap from LilThunder on etsy, along with a washcloth and an organic beer.
Crochet washcloths
I made crochet cotton washcloths for everyone. I really like the way the blue and greens look and plan to make some for us. I think they would make great baby shower and wedding gifts as well.

Kitchen finished!

Well, I actually finished everything in time for my open house last Sunday. I just now got around to taking pictures of the finished product though. Mom made the curtains with fabric that I got at Ikea. I painted everything! New drawer pulls, new light fixture and cleaned up upper cabinets. I'm really pleased with the result. Of course now I can't find a good before picture. I never remember to do that.

A little bit of Christmas

Recycled paper wreath
I didn't do much decorating for Christmas this year. I thought I would share some of what I did do though. I am in love with this recycled paper wreath by LaAlicia! I first saw Alicia at the Jingle Bash that I participated in last month. She does garland as well, so clever.
My Christmas decor
I did several little flower arrangements for an open house that I had here last Sunday. They still look great! I think carnations are underrated.

My Christmas decor

My Pawpaw made these.
These Santas were carved by my Pawpaw probably 15 years ago? My mom would know, she painted them. They are very nostalgic for me and make me miss Pawpaw a little more.

Here are the few gifts that I have wrapped so far. The bags are full of more wrapped gifts, those are the only two! I had an early Christmas with my friend Susan and her family, which I will share more of later.

Cookies for breakfast

Yeah, that's right. They have oats, cranberries and pecans, so that's healthy breakfast food, right? I'm recovering from a crazy week and didn't have anything to make for breakfast this morning.

Frank and I hosted an open house/jewelry sale here yesterday. We haven't done much entertaining, this being only the second time in seven years since we moved into our home. It turned out really well. Great friends and family shared a good time.

As soon as I clean up the mess in the kitchen I will take photos of my beautifully redone space.
I have to thank my generous mother for making lovely curtains for our lower kitchen cabinets. She was here til midnight on Friday sewing them up and I feel mighty lucky indeed. I spent the evening making Christmas cookies. I made Coconut macaroons, Cocoa kiss cookies, German Drop cookies, and these Oat bars. It was the most I had ever baked in my own kitchen, as we usually do Christmas cookies at mom's house. My space is definitely more limited, but I must say I really enjoyed it!

Just in Time

Am I crazy?!

So, we are having an open house and jewelry sale here on Sunday. This fact motivated Frank and I to do some long needed and wanted home repairs. I spent yesterday morning painting the walls and ceiling in the kitchen. I put on new drawer pulls from ikea, and today have been painting the insides of the cabinets. I thought if we painted them another color it would look like we have no cabinet doors purposefully! I picked Icy Blue which is really subtle but beautiful. The lower cabinets are going to get curtains with fabric that I also got at ikea.

Valspar's Icy Blue
As if I don't have work to do! Better get back to this crazy house.

Mother Bear Project

I just discovered, via Lion Brand Yarn's newsletter, this great non-profit organization called Mother Bear Project.

The Mother Bear Project is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear.

The simple gift of a hand-knit bear with a tag signed by the knitter has touched children with the message that they are unconditionally loved.

For a five dollar donation to the organization you will receive the crochet or knitting pattern. You then create bears for the group to distribute to children. If you are a crocheter or knitter or know someone who is please help out.

Etsy Front Page

My Bubble Earrings made the front page last night! Thanks to Paper Mode for creating this lovely treasury! When searching the Etsy front pagers flickr group I found out that these earrings were on the front page on Wednesday in Ash Hilton's treasury. Don't know how I missed that one.

Front page!!

My treasury made the front page!!! I think that is only the second time that a treasury I made has hit the front page. Very exciting.

New Obsession

I finished my second crochet project last night, this ear flap hat. It was the first one with a pattern and I'm really proud of myself. I used Sensations Licorice yarn from Joann's. I think the thick and thin yarn made it a little harder to learn on, but my hat turned out pretty well in the end.

I'm working on a trade with my friend Natasha of Luxe for some great handspun and handdyed yarns. Along with obsessing over crochet patterns and yarn, I have found myself wanting to crochet instead of work on my jewelry. I spent two hours today working on a scarf based on the stitches in this dress. In fact, I'm about to sit down and work on it some more.

Luxe Yarn
So, you will be seeing a lot more posts like this from me, I'm sure. And if you are on my Christmas gift list, well then I hope you like warm fuzzy crocheted things!
