Birthday Roundup

My dad's birthday was earlier in April and we had a fish fry with friends at my parent's house. Here are all the kiddos singing Happy Birthday to him.
Happy Birthday Pops!

I made the Carrot Cake (of course) and it was delicious as usual. I doubled the recipe without writing down the amounts (don't do that) and messed up the first batch, which included 8 eggs, yikes. Luckily we had enough ingredients to make another doubled batch, and mom saved the day on the messed up one. I had added too much flour and realized it before I added the carrots because it was thicker than it should have been. She added a whole can of crushed pineapple (and left out carrots), with the juice and we baked it in a sheet pan. It had to cook for a loooong time because it had so much liquid, but didn't burn and actually came out delicious. We saved that one for our trip to San Antonio the next weekend.
Anyways, the real Carrot Cake came out great and with a double batch I did a three layer square cake using 9x9 pans and had enough for some cupcakes too.
Everyone loved it!

Frank turned 38 this past Saturday and we have had a week of celebrations. Last week I made a deal with him, Indian buffet for lunch and then a nice bike ride on the Trinity trail in the evening. I don't do buffets too often, but it sure was good and here is Frank eating the Rice Pudding dessert, the best part!

Our bike ride was fabulous, the weather perfect and the sunset beautiful!

We went to Austin and Wimberley for the weekend to be with my family.
Frank is hard to surprise and I had decided to get him a Smoker BBQ Pit for his birthday. He hadn't specifically asked for one, but I knew he would be into it. My dad is a BBQ master and has a huge smoker on a trailer, so he knew what to get. I put together a big bag of BBQ accessories to give him so he would figure out the big gift. It had a tool kit, charcoal chimney, glove and what has turned out to be the best book, Smoke and Spice. Before he opened that bag of gifts, my dad was hooking his empty trailer up to his truck and Frank asked why. Dad told him we were going to get his bday gift and needed the trailer but Frank didn't believe him. When he realized dad wasn't kidding he was bewildered.
Yes, I pulled off a big birthday surprise!

We will be breaking it in this weekend and I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh, and I made a batch of Carrot Cake cupcakes to take to Frank's mom's for his birthday dinner there a couple of nights ago. Everyone loved them and I froze the extras so that I wouldn't gobble them down, I've only had the one at his mom's so that seems to be working.

Mom's birthday is coming up and I'm itching to try baking something other than Carrot Cake. Sorry mom, you might have to branch out this year.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter!

I crocheted a last minute Easter bunny for Karlie's basket this weekend. I used cottons that I had on hand. The pattern is linked to on the ravelry project page. I added the skirt, its not in the pattern. Karlie loved the cascarones and the candy of course. We loved watching her have fun!

We also celebrated Frank's birthday this weekend and he got an awesome birthday present that I will tell you all about soon.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and a Happy Easter.

In the Garden

I had to run out in the rain to get pictures of my clematis and larkspur this morning. I was afraid if I didn't do it now they would be gone by the time I remembered again. I have been spending a lot of time in the garden lately, weeding, transplanting and trimming my plants. I love this time of year in Texas.

This rose, which is on my arbor is already done with its big show. It has one good bloom and the subsequent flowers are smaller and more sparse. I love it when the first bloom comes out though.

I have my veggies and just need to get them in the ground.

We have prepped this triangle for new grass and are going to go with Zoysia from seed. We couldn't find sod without having to purchase an entire palette. I guess Zoysia is not used too often around here, but Frank loves it and its supposed to do well, so we are going with it.

I hope you are enjoying your spring and your garden, yard, or whatever outdoor space you love.
I will be away from here for the weekend celebrating Frank's birthday and Easter with my niece Karlie Rose.

Hill Country

Sorry for my absence. I have been catching up on things around here, you know the yard work, the house work the taxes, etc. I have also been spending time with my niece Karlie Rose, the sweetest little girl I know. We have so much fun with her and are so happy when she is around.

My parent's house is officially on the market, which I am not too happy about, not being good with change and all. I will miss having them 40 minutes away, but will definitely enjoy visiting them at their lovely new property, which is pictured above. We stayed there for my show in San Antonio, it's only a 45 minute drive from there. I was telling my dad as we left, driving through the Hill Country how at home I feel there. It is so beautiful and it calms me. I think the reason is that we grew up vacationing, camping and visiting dear family friends in the Texas Hill Country throughout my childhood, and those are some of my best memories. I do look forward to having a home base in Central Texas, but am not in a hurry for my parents to move away.

Fiesta Art Fair

Fiesta 2011
My booth at Fiesta and possibly my new booth shot for show applications.

I have recovered from last weekends show in San Antonio, Fiesta Art Fair. As always, it was a lovely show and I was honored to be included amongst such great talent! It was dang hot though, and I think that kept a lot of people away.
My wonderful parents were indespinsable, and I don't know how I could do it without them. Dad helped us set up and mom suffered in the heat all weekend with me. I paid her in jewelry, both mine and in a trade with a friend. I hope she doesn't mind that.

I enjoyed seeing lots of my jewelry and art friends, both Texans and the travelers that come from far and wide. Many of those travelers will be at Main Street Art Fest here in Fort Worth this weekend. I'm going today to say hi and check out all the great art. Someday, hopefully, I will be one of the exhibiting artists at Main Street!

Some of my jewelry friends who will be there this weekend are Lisa Crowder, Pyper Hugos, and Kimberley Morris. Go out and support the artists at this wonderful show.

Works in Progress

I was featured over at Lark Crafts yesterday in a post about jewelry design in process. The question was whether you find images of works in progress inspiring, and I certainly do. I was inspired to share some images of my current works in progress with you today.

You can see more of my jewelry under construction here in my flickr stream.
I find these images quite inspiring, and I hope you enjoy them too.
